Subproject 7 - Hybrid Solutions
Aim of the subproject
The purpose of the hybrid subproject is to evaluate the potential energy savings generated by an onboard energy storage system concept and to mix the conventional diesel traction technologies with the most advanced traction and energy management technologies. Energy efficiency reduces the fuel consumption which in turn minimises both CO2 and pollutant emissions. The only way to get a significant reduction in fossil fuel consumption and significantly higher reduction of pollutant emissions than the IIIB objectives appears therefore to reduce the energy consumption by an on board energy storage system using the braking energy, so as to be able to reuse it in traction. In addition there will be emission savings in the same proportion or even higher since the diesel engine can be operated in an optimal way.
